SARAH MUWANGA

artist.jpg

Sarah Muwanga is a self-taught contemporary figurative painter based between London and Portsmouth, United Kingdom. Working primarily in oil on canvas, her practice explores identity and intimacy. Rooted in her experience of dual heritage and an ongoing negotiation of belonging, her work is shaped by a sensitivity to in-between states; cultural, emotional, and physical. She is drawn to subtle, often overlooked moments; a shared silence, a pause, or a moment of reflection.

Through layered colour, expressive mark-making, and patterned environments, she constructs interiors that feel both remembered and imagined. Repetition, pattern, and outlined forms act as fragments of memory, holding onto the atmosphere of a moment as much as the subject itself. Her work seeks not only to represent the figure, but to evoke a sense of presence, inviting the viewer into a space that feels both intimate and quietly familiar.
