JEAN NOBLE
RI SWA
My most recent work has been taken from the Canary wharf area of the Thames. I have been gradually inching my way down from Chelsea, past the city over the last 20 years. All my work begins in front of the subject. I allow my eyes to relax and my thoughts to absorb what is around me so that from the initial sketch I make a response to my surroundings. I love the juxtaposition of the towering glass buildings, the bustle of the business sector with the ever flowing Thames its constant motion of boats carrying cargo or passengers. Life on the Thames is a rich tapestry of houseboats and ferries. Back in the studio I interpret my sketches into paintings that once started often dictate changes and further responses to colour and shapes that I recollect from my original interpretation. As an abstract painter it is very important to me to keep the ‘idea’ of the original reaction to a given space and allow the viewer room for their own interpretation as well. The finished piece evolves out of a process of continual change and an innate knowledge of colour and composition. Jean’s interest in the two dimensional plane and the texture of the picture surface is evident. Jean believes art is an extraordinary glance at the ordinary.
