LUCY MARKS

Lucy is a contemporary landscape painter working in both oil and watercolour. Her dynamic compositions express the ever-changing energy and movement within the landscape. Subsequently her works capture all the various energies of the land, sea and sky; from wild seas to pensive landscapes. Lucy works directly in the environment en plein air. These alla prima works are both standalone paintings and also used as primary source material back in the studio for larger works.

Her fresh and instinctive marks, the juxtaposition of colours and textures, convey the physicality of the subject. It is this physicality that encourages viewers to ‘feel’ as opposed to just ‘see’. Experiencing Lucy’s work is a sensory and emotional journey, encouraging the viewer to explore his/her memories and subliminal evocations of place.

Lucy won the Humphrey’s Purchase Prize at the ING Discerning Eye, and was shortlisted for the ING Discerning Eye Drawing Bursary. Lucy was elected an Associate of the Royal Watercolour Society in 2021 and is also a Member of the Chelsea Art Society. She has exhibited at the Mall Galleries in London with the Royal Institute of Oil Painters, the Royal Society of Marine Artists, the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolour and the Sunday Times Watercolour Competition, to name but a few.

She regularly exhibits across London and the South East and was invited by Petworth House to paint their park and gardens for a solo show, ‘Dawn to Dusk’, in the Summer of 2021. Her work “Golden Dawn - Across to Tillington Monument, Petworth” was exhibited and sold at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition in 2022.

Lucy holds an MA in Fine Art. Lucy lives and works on the South Coast in West Sussex.
