ASYA DUDKO
BA Hons (Interior Design) SWA

Asya Dudko is a figurative sculptor and visual artist whose practice blends sculpture, painting, and
relief art. Born in Russia, her early life and cultural heritage profoundly shaped her artistic vision. The
visual and symbolic language of her homeland — rooted in folklore, craftsmanship, and an
emotional connection to nature — continues to inform her work, giving rise to a distinctive visual
vocabulary rich in texture, character, and quiet narrative.
Asya describes life as full of mystery, and it is this sense of the unknown that fascinates and inspires
her art. Through her sculptures, she explores contradictions — elements that cannot coexist but find
harmony within her work. Her characters embody the belief that anything is possible: a Snowball
Collector who preserves snow forever, an Unknown Soldier who achieves the impossible,
or Moonlight Birds that carry messages from distant worlds.
Her cultural background remains a constant source of inspiration. Objects such as keys, wheels, and
bells, alongside recurring motifs including fish, birds with human faces, and winged figures, are
drawn from Russian legends and fairy tales. These symbols evoke spiritual and eternal ideas and are
often expressed using blue, contrasted with red: colours traditionally associated with divinity and
the heavenly realm in Russian culture. While recognising that symbols may hold different meanings
across cultures, Asya believes these timeless concepts speak universally.
Each sculpture carries its own narrative, often revealing itself gradually. Sometimes an idea arrives
fully formed; at other times, it emerges through the act of making, as though the work itself begins
to lead the process. For Asya, visual form is the key to unlocking meaning, yet each viewer is invited
to bring their own interpretation. Her aim is to touch hearts and awaken emotions that lie quietly
within the soul inviting reflection rather than explanation.
After relocating to the United Kingdom in the early 2000s, Asya embraced new opportunities for
artistic growth while maintaining a strong connection to her origins. She holds a First-Class Honours
Degree in Interior Design, a discipline that deepened her understanding of spatial composition,
materiality, and the relationship between form and environment, qualities that now define her
sculptural practice.
Over the years, Asya has developed her own unique sculpting technique using air-drying clay
Creative Paperclay. This medium allows her to create intricate details and textural effects that
convey emotion and depth. Her process begins with a wire armature, which she gradually builds
upon to form expressive, tactile surfaces. Once sculpted, each piece is carefully finished with layers
of acrylic and oil paints that merge sculpture with the essence of painting.
Asya is a Full Member of the Society of Women Artists (ASWA) and has exhibited regularly at
the Society’s annual exhibitions at the Mall Galleries, London. Her achievements include the John Doubleday Award (2025) and selection as a winner of the VAA Art100 International Award (2025), reflecting her growing recognition within the contemporary art community.
