SUE NICHOLSON

Having closely observed, photographed and painted wildlife when time permitted during a long teaching career, it seemed to Sue on retiring that sculpture, with its different challenges, might be an intriguing extension of that. It has now become an exciting and
absorbing passion.
In her work she aims to suggest fur, feather and muscle through using a textured approach, rather than seeking a smooth, closely detailed representation. She loves the feel of the raw clay and the way a creature gradually appears under her fingers. Conveying an idea, evoking a response from the viewer to a hinted situation is also important to her. Vital therefore is injecting a suggestion of individuality through expression or attitude.
Sometimes Sue will fire the finished clay creature in her kiln as a unique glazed piece. At other times she creates a piece intended as a limited edition; that is, a specified number of identical casts from a mould of the finished clay, mainly in bronze resin. These she produces herself, having studied the processes involved at adult education classes.
She has exhibited regularly with the Society of Women Artists since 2006, and also at many outdoor and indoor venues across the South-East. Her work is in private collections throughout the UK, also in France and Germany.
