Christine Charlesworth MRSS SWA specialises in figurative and portrait sculpture and always endeavors to capture the character, spirit, and motivation of her subject. She also likes to show life and movement in all her work.

An elected member of the Royal Society of Sculptors since 2008 Christine has been an exhibiting member with SWA since 2007.

Since 2000 Christine has completed 18 public commissions, 45 private commissions and has won a number of awards. Her first public sculpture commission in 2006 was for The Seeds of Hope Remembrance Garden at Guildford Cathedral of children playing at dandelion clocks. This was followed almost immediately by a commission for 5 life-size portrait figures of children playing 'Oranges and Lemons' for Ramster House Gardens.

In 2010 Christine was selected as a sculptor for BT Art of Sport, working towards and including the 2012 Olympics. Five of her limited edition Olympic sculptures were purchased by towns and corporate organisations and her award-winning bronze action-portrait of Ade Adepitan playing wheelchair basketball was purchased for Woking town center. A life-size female Sprint Runner was commissioned for the Wing Tai prestigious development in Hong Kong

Christine also enjoys working with welded fabricated metals to produce more contemporary work. Her ‘People of Guildford’, set on railings near Guildford Railway station depicts the everyday life of 36 people as different cut-outs in stainless steel. Her 2.5-meter tall stainless-steel ‘Peace and Magna Carter’ is in Runnymede and ‘Jutland Sailors’, a double-sided steel cut-out of ‘Sailors Past and Future,’ two sailors , 1916 and 2016, stands in the center of the Woodland Trust Jutland Commemorate Grove at Langley Wood.

 

2020/2021 Christine created three statues of important female figures. Her Greta Thunberg statue, which is the first in the world, stands outside the main entrance to Winchester University, one of the greenest in the UK. This sculpture depicts Greta showing her vulnerabilities, but also her strength, as an inspiration to students. The well-known suffragette, Emily Wilding Davison, now sits on her pale granite bench in the center of Epsom and receives floral tributes almost daily. The live-streamed event can be seen on Youtube, as can the whole story of creating the statue. In July the one-and-quarter life-size statue of Dame Ethel Smyth, composer, writer, suffragette, and sportswoman, will be unveiled in the center of Woking.

 

Christine hopes to have the opportunity to create more bronze statues of women and girls in the future as they seem to be very under-represented. She has many of her limited edition works in galleries in the UK and her sculptures have been purchased by collectors worldwide. Christine is happy for people to visit her studio and workshop by appointment where a lrage selection of work is on display.
