The Dance Class ii
This is a study in oils of a Bath Dance College student class. it was created late last year from sketches and photographs made within class rehearsals. Dancers are seen stretching their muscles in preparation for the work ahead.
The main focus of the painting is a single dancer positioned across the wide foreground, calmly concentrating on the placement of her extended body. But she is set in front of several fellow-dancers and they are reflected once again behind her in the huge wall mirror, creating a background sea of limbs. Interlocking subjects, negative spaces and neutral tones help create a semi-abstract quality to this work.
