'Tate's account of her time as 'a maid' to
a 1940s Soho tart is warm and affecting' (READERS DIGEST )
West End Girls Barbara Tate Published by Orion on 22 July 2010 £12.99 hardback Barbara Tate was 17 when she heard the whispered word that would change her life : Soho. It would take four years for Barbara to escape her loveless home but when she finally made it to the forbidden streets of Soho - just as London was recovering from the trauma of the Second World War - things would never be the same again. There the naive Barbara meets the beautiful and capricious Mae. When she takes a job as Mae's maid, Barbara imagines she'll be housekeeping. But down a shabby backstreet, Barbara discovers the secret lives of Soho's working girls. An astonishing world full of fierce friendships and bitter rivalries, dangerous men and desparate measures, Barbara soon learns that taking the money from a staggering supply of punters and making copious amounts of tea are only the bare essentials. She will need to be nursemaid, protector and confidante to impossible, adorable, self-destructive Mae.
The tumultuous and
heartrending friendship at the heart of this spellbinding tale gives us
a window on a people and a place almost lost to us. It's a true story of
adventure, survival and growing up, told with experience, honesty and
real heart. Barbara Tate left
her Soho life and went on to marry, raise a family and become a successful
painter. As well as serving as president of the Society of Women Artists,
Barbara also received an honorary professorship from Thames Valley University.
Barbara died in 2009. Confusion often stems from the word Prints. Tiny Nijman and Pam Henderson have put together an interesting article explaining the distinct differences. PRINTS There is a clear distinction between images which are conceived from the outset culminating in artist’ original prints, and those which simply reproduce images first conceived in another medium. Giclee (or other generic named process) prints are commercially produced reproductions of an original painting. They are digitally printed onto high quality archival papers or canvas using specially pigmented lightfast inks. The artist created the original work but is not directly involved in the printing process. The number of reproductions is known as an edition, which may be large or small. Sometimes, these reproductions are numbered and signed individually by the artist. In creating a true reproduction, the prints will all be identical to the original work. Their value lies in the initial creativity of the artist, combined with the sophisticated technology used to reproduce the original work. But the same technology can change the size and even the colours of the original work. These prints could be described as high quality copies. An original print is an image transferred (usually) to paper from a printing surface. The artist conceives the artwork with the intention of producing prints and it is these, rather than the blocks or plate from which they are printed, that are the original works of art. Because they are processed by hand, there may be small variations in the prints. There are many different processes an artist may use: intaglio (carving into the plate or block with a sharp implement or acid to create a texture so that the ink-filled furrows print on the paper) for processes such as: engraving, etching, drypoint, aquatint or mezzotint); relief (carving out the background with knives, gougers, even electric routers), the opposite of intaglio, so that the design is formed from the relief, for processes such as woodcut, wood engraving, linocut, or collograph. A reduction linocut means that once the first colour has been printed, the block is progressively cut away to make subsequent blocks for different colours, so mistakes are fatal! lithography depends on the antipathy of grease and water, originally used with stone; monotype, a single impression which must be created every single time it is printed; silk or screenprints, based on the stencil principle (which originally used silk) where an image is created on the mesh and ink is forced through it with a rubber blade onto the printed surface. Every stage of the process is carried out by the artist who creates the artwork on the plate or block, putting it through a press with paper (usually handmade), then lifting off the resulting print. The plate is then cleaned and the process repeated for each print until the edition is finished. Several colours may be used. Editions are usually smaller than those of commercial reproductions and prints may vary slightly because they are carried out by hand rather than technology. Techniques used by artist-printmakers are sometimes not easy to classify because different unorthodox materials and techniques may be used in combination and suitable surfaces may include the traditional surfaces of metal, stone, wood, lino as well as glass or Perspex, using printing aids such as rollers, brushes, rags, even fingers, as individual artists enthusiastically devise their own ways of satisfying their creative ends. Original prints are consequently more expensive and more collectable than reproduction prints. The artist controls the whole process from conception of the artwork to the signing of the edition, so each print should show the individual number of the print and the number in the edition (for instance, 1/50, 2/50, etc.) ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ London Art Co UK Ltd Would you like to sell your work online? www.londonart.co.uk is now the Internet's leading contemporary art site.
