An article on the success of 2009 Mall Galleries Exhibition

Once more unto the Mall dear friends, once more

Last Friday I had an appointment in London and therefore yet another opportunity to see some more works of art.

So it was back to the Mall Galleries for Sandy and me to view an exhibition of mixed media works by ‘The Society of Women Artists’. Where do I begin? Amazing, stunning, beautiful, incredible?

The show was all of that and more. Watercolours, acrylics, oils and pastels plus some excellent, and dare I say it, ‘proper’ sculptures. The exhibition would most certainly appeal to most tastes with almost 500 works on show including some delightful bronze dogs and a family group of bronze warthogs with mum and two baby hoglets, all three in a line measuring no more than a foot in total - delightful.

I was also ‘blown away’ by what I first took to be a fine example of ‘my kind of oil painting’. A still life picture of a black and white cloth, a bright red enamel coffee pot and, oddly, a few black and white glass marbles. Absolutely gorgeous, but not an oil painting at all. I can’t remember the title but the picture was by Christine Russell SWA and was done in pastels. Incredible! I have never seen a pastel work so beautiful. Even thinking and writing about it now has made me come over all unnecessary.

As I mentioned earlier, there was something in the show to appeal to most art lovers and Jean W would have been beside herself on seeing some brilliant watercolours of cockerels and chickens.

Likewise, I’m certain that Betty would have appreciated some very fine gouache animal portraits which included an orangutan, a couple of superb tigers and a very fine zebra.

We were a long time in the gallery where we would normally sort of ‘speed look’ at the rows of works and then home in on anything with particular appeal, giving other pictures no more than a passing glance. With this exhibition we simply could not do that as 99% of the works just had to be given ample study time.

We took frequent rests and one tea break with the obligatory sticky Danish. All that oohing and aahing left us tired and more than ready for an early evening meal so off we strolled in lovely bright sunshine until, surprise, surprise we found ourselves in ‘Bella Italia’, our favourite eatery which is just behind The National Portrait Gallery. (some BARTies may be familiar with said joint!) A generous platter of Linguini con Gambas and a much needed glass of Italian red really complemented our Friday afternoon and it was two very contented folk who got on the train for the journey home.

Unfortunately, by the time you read this the exhibition will only have three days to run as it  finishes on Saturday 2 May. Despite that, I do hope you can get to see it as for an entry fee of just £1.50 (con.) it must be the best value in town and, if I could, I would go again even if it was just to drool and sob unashamedly as I looked again at that stunningly beautiful pastel still life. Oooohh!
