I am sorry to bring you news of the death of one of our most valued members.
Rosemarie de Goede had been a member of the SWA since 2000 and her unique lively drawings were much sought after. Her work is held in many collections both Public and Private, at home and abroad.
Liz Seward, a great friend of hers, tells me that she had many friends who were as devoted to her as she was to them. We shall miss her wonderful sense of humour and wise counsel.

Barbara Tate
Readers of a shockable disposition should avoid this book - everyone
else should rush out and buy a first edition. It is a jaw dropping
account of Soho prostitues in the late forties - a world Barbara (Babs
Tate) knew as she worked for one as her maid. She always said she wanted
to paint one perfect picture before she died: she has certainly written
one perfect book.' (Lynn Barber THE SUNDAY TIMES )
The
real lives, loves and friendship of 1940s Soho and its working girls
West
End Girls
Barbara
Tate
Published
by Orion on 22 July 2010 £12.99 hardback
Barbara
Tate was 17 when she heard the whispered word that would change her life : Soho.
It would take four years for Barbara to escape her loveless home but when she
finally made it to the forbidden streets of Soho - just as London was recovering
from the trauma of the Second World War - things would never be the same again.
There the naive Barbara meets the beautiful and capricious Mae. When she takes a
job as Mae's maid, Barbara imagines she'll be housekeeping. But down a shabby
backstreet, Barbara discovers the secret lives of Soho's working girls.
An
astonishing world full of fierce friendships and bitter rivalries, dangerous men
and desparate measures, Barbara soon learns that taking the money from a
staggering supply of punters and making copious amounts of tea are only the bare
essentials. She will need to be nursemaid, protector and confidante to
impossible, adorable, self-destructive Mae.
The tumultuous and
heartrending friendship at the heart of this spellbinding tale gives us
a window on a people and a place almost lost to us. It's a true story of
adventure, survival and growing up, told with experience, honesty and
real heart.
Barbara Tate left
her Soho life and went on to marry, raise a family and become a successful
painter. As well as serving as president of the Society of Women Artists,
Barbara also received an honorary professorship from Thames Valley University.
Barbara died in 2009.

Prints
There is a clear distinction between images which are conceived from
the outset culminating in artist’ original prints, and those
which simply reproduce images first conceived in another medium. Giclee
(or other generic named process) prints are commercially
produced reproductions of an original painting. They are
digitally printed onto high quality archival papers or canvas
using specially pigmented lightfast inks. The artist
created the original work but is not directly involved in the
printing process. The number of reproductions is known as
an edition, which may be large or small. Sometimes,
these reproductions are numbered and signed individually by the
artist. In creating a true reproduction, the prints will
all be identical to the original work. Their value lies in
the initial creativity of the artist, combined with the sophisticated technology used to reproduce the original work. But the same technology can change the size and even the
colours of the original work. These prints could be
described as high quality copies. An original print is an image transferred (usually) to paper from a
printing surface. The artist conceives the artwork with
the intention of producing prints and it is these, rather than
the blocks or plate from which they are printed, that are the
original works of art. Because they are processed by hand,
there may be small variations in the prints.

please follow this link: www.tinynijmanart.com |

How
to produce digital pictures for printing or the web
For
printing your pictures in most publications they should ideally be
2 to 3 megabytes in size, and saved at 300 dpi [dots per inch]
For
a website they can be resized to under 1 megabyte and saved at 72
dpi, this is to ensure that they cannot be copied from the website
and used elsewhere.
Set
your camera to take the largest file (the setting that takes the
fewest pictures!) 10-12 megapixels is more than enough.
For
the best results indoors use daylight bulbs, and a tripod. If you
are using natural daylight, use a bright day, but out of direct
sunlight.
Frame
your picture as square/evenly as possible in the viewfinder to
avoid distortion, and a steady hand is essential to avoid camera
shake if no tripod available.
What
you will need:
-digital
camera. You don’t need a camera that produces very large files
(10 or 12 megapixel is not required although there is a growing
trend for cameras that produce large files). Good, small,
compact cameras such as Canon and Panasonic will
do the job.
-a
pair of strip lights,
-a
tripod
-a
computer - If
you want to publish on the Web or email your images then you will
need a computer.
The
pictures need to be saved on the computer at least 2
to 3 Mb (megabytes) in size and they will need to be saved at 300
dpi for most things like publications, brochures or prints.
Happy
Snapping!
