An
experienced artist working in the disciplines of painting and photography, Jan
has a BA (Hons) Fine Art Degree from the University College for the Creative
Arts at Farnham. She
trained in Graphic Design at the Berkshire College of Art in Reading, worked
in publishing and then as a tutor in drawing and painting. In 1997 she became
a member of the Society of Women Artists. Personal
Statement
The
paintings are oils on box canvas. Ethereal light and contrast create a
dramatic landscape which speaks of destiny and hope linked to ideas of life
and death. The aim, as with my photographs, is to invite contemplation and
engage the viewer by identifying concerns about humanity, hope and our destiny
and thus, by posing these questions that can never be answered, encourage
dialogue with the work. My
photographs draw upon the sub-consciousness and the psyche with the use of
metaphor. I hope to evoke a sense of unease, the suggestion of a presence
linked to the ideas of life and death, something disquieting, unexplained
beyond human experience and sometimes that of nostalgia, the fading or
disintegration of material things. Academic
